California Calling

Gambling in California has been legalized decades back. Since then, the gaming in different forms has taken an uphill standard. Today, the Californians can choose from an array of choices available: pari-mutuel horse wagering, Indian casinos, charitable gaming, card clubs, state lottery and many others to have an opportunity to relax and win money.

The basic structure of gambling was however cemented through constitutional amendments and not through legislation, while the constitution does not permit gambling like Nevada and New Jersey casino sort of.

According to the handle (total amount wagered), California is the sixth largest gambling state in the United States of America with revenue of $ 14.6 billion gambling business (excluding Indian casino games). However, the revenue earned from gambling in California card rooms, where gaming is played between players, has been exempted as it is quite difficult to measure the handle there. With a zero number of high-stakes casinos, this state is preceded by Nevada (226.4), New Jersey (86.4), Mississippi (32.5), Illinois (26.7), and Louisiana (25.9). The estimated figure may sound like a small portion of California’s $ 700 billion turnover, it may be considered as a sizeable amount though. Amongst the various choices available, lottery topped the popularity chart with a 59 per cent votes and outdid the other options by a high margin when followed by horse races (10%), Indian gaming (8%), and card rooms (3%).

The gaming has not only been popular intrastate, but has also crossed the line to make it interstate. The casinos in Nevada are largely fed by the Californians with $ 9.5 billion spent on gambling each year.

A new amended federal law has recently permitted the cruise ships to call gambling at the consecutive California ports. Another change that has taken place is the legalization of simulcast wagering of pari-mutuel gaming, which is played at a remote site from the actual racetrack. Of late, the handle at simulcast has been exceeded the amount wagered in races.
